《勸服》和珍·奧斯汀前面幾部作品相比較沒那麼討喜，少了互相拌嘴的對白，沒有逗趣的配角映襯，多了成年女性面對可能要孤老終生的憂慮與考量，以及對於緣分的患得患失。從現代讀者的角度來看，或許比起《艾瑪》那樣的故事，讀者更容易接觸或經歷類似的人物與情境。
故事描述女主角安年輕時和男主角菲德瑞克陷入熱戀，但親人們認為他們身分懸殊，安是貴族，菲德瑞克只是低階海軍，於是勸說之下，安最終拒絕了菲德瑞克的求婚。
時隔9年後，雙方立場大逆轉，菲德瑞克靠自己的能力已晉升收入豐碩的海軍上尉，安則因為父親與姊姊的揮霍性格，導致家族經濟狀況搖搖欲墜，成為搬到鄉間低調生活的沒落貴族，兩人意外重逢，雖然表面上看起來平靜無波，但安其實很緊張，她發現這麼多年過去，自己卻依然仍對菲德瑞克動心，但菲德瑞克呢？若說這份情感依舊成立，是否會被他認為自己只是個勢利的女子？因為他們都不敢確定，彼此的愛是否還存在。
